At first glance, Kate doesn't seem like the nicest person. She's a lying, manipulative, sociopathic hot mess of emotions. When we're first introduced to her she's on a merciless hunt for the alpha. Arrogantly yelling "come get me" even before she's identified what she's fighting against. This tells us a lot about how she was brought up and how she views the whole concept of the werewolf situation of Beacon Hills.

Kate sort of has a superiority complex with regards to the supernatural. The way the Argents are raised there's a very thick line in the sand between what's supernatural and what isn't. And, a lot of the Argents beliefs stem from taking responsibility in protecting people because they're aware that line. It's given to the Argents in a way that separates them from being killers because they kill to protect who they can when they can. Generally, the code exists to emphasize that they're better because the werewolf had to strike first.

The core of Kate's personality comes from how she treats the code.
